Description

A fragment of Carlyle's manuscript in the National Library of Scotland contains an interesting preliminary version of a passage in Book Four, chapter three of Past and Present on the "mournful[ly]" destructive power of the military. Analysis of Carlyle's revisions within this fragment, and of his revisions of the same passage at later stages for the British Library draft, the Yale printer's copy, and the 1843 first edition, sheds light on Carlyle's largely accretive methods of revision. The National Library of Scotland leaf bears an internal date of "'41," suggesting that Carlyle may have labored on Past and Present for a significantly longer time than has been understood previously. **********
